Ever since the time of Jesus, people have believed that our mission is to follow him as though he were our master and we were his servants. But I’m quite sure that’s not really what he had in mind. Perhaps it’s more like we should follow Jesus as though he were a master and we are his apprentices. The difference being that in time an apprentice to a carpenter, for example, is no longer an apprentice but becomes, in fact, a carpenter her or himself. He or she no longer needs to ask the master carpenter how to do this or that because she or he already knows. I’m not saying that we should get to a point when we claim to be, in fact, Jesus. Rather that we’ve ingrained Jesus’ values so into ourselves that we’re Jesus-like, or Christ-like.
